The Secrets That Kept Them

by Johanna Nauraine

What would you do if you discovered you were married to a stranger?

Lindsey has a secret she’s never told her husband. She killed someone she loved due to carelessness. Now, five years into her marriage, after a traumatic stillbirth, Lindsey becomes obsessed with the idea that she’s too reckless to care for a child, and refuses to get pregnant again.

Josh, a successful corporate attorney, grew up poor, with a drug addicted mother whom he’s never spoken about to Lindsey. He spent years in foster care and briefly lived on the streets of Chicago, committing an act that still haunts him. Josh longs for a child, believing this will give him a chance to have the family he never had.

After a tumultuous year of conflict, over the issue of trying again to have a child, Josh becomes enraged, committing a cruel and desperate act. Lindsey is left to make sense of his abrupt disappearance, as well as being forced to decide what to do, when she discovers she’s pregnant with his child.
